A new store in Hanover touts products made with CBD, a chemical component of hemp, as a natural treatment for pain and anxiety.
“We’ve been busy,” said Jim Olson, who owns Your CBD Store – Hanover with his wife, MaryEllen Olson. “People are excited to find us.”
The Hanover store, which opened Aug. 29 at 1271 Washington St., carries products containing CBD that include oil tinctures, water soluble, capsules, lotions, gummies, hard candies and vapes. It also carries pet products, including dog biscuits and oil tinctures that contain a lower amount of CBD than products for humans.

CBD, or cannabidiol, is a chemical component derived from industrial hemp. CBD is different from THC, the chemical compound in marijuana that produces a euphoric sensation, or “high.” Olsen explained that hemp and marijuana are different strains of the same species of plant, cannabis.
Olson said CBD interacts with a body’s endocannabinoid system, a type of neurotransmitter, and can be used to reduce inflammation and pain. When used internally, he said, it can help regulate a body’s digestive, nervous, immune and endocrine systems.
“So over a wide area, it can really stabilize the body and bring it back into homeostasis, without using drugs,” he said, adding that it can help some people avoid using prescription pain killers.
“It’s not dangerous, you can’t get addicted to it,” he said.
The store is one of about 400 Your CBD Store locations nationally. In July, a location opened in Braintree, and the next closest stores are in Salem and Reading. The chain touts itself as the “Starbucks of CBD” and focuses on selling CBD products in a “boutique-style” setting.
Olson said he and his wife both struggled with chronic pain before starting to use CBD products.
“I know what that’s like, and it’s an awful place to be,” he said. He previously worked as a contractor, and his wife was a health educator and personal trainer. The couple splits their time between Hanover and Aiken, South Carolina, where they opened their first Your CBD Store location in December.
Olson said while plenty of people come into the store with questions about using CBD, many have used it in the past and are excited to find a store selling it locally. Olsen recalled one customer who said CBD is the only effective treatment for her anxiety and panic attacks and cried tears of relief after realizing she can now buy CBD in her hometown.
Answering questions and helping people manage pain and anxiety is a huge reason why he enjoys working in the industry, Olsen said.
“I love that part of the job. It’s really interactive,” he said.
