CHICAGO (WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Inside a small commercial kitchen in Chicago’s West Town neighborhood, sits the latest trend in pain relief, CBD products.
“We produce topicals, edibles and oils. We sell through e-commerce, physician practices and we’re in several stores throughout the city,” said Dave DiCosola, Co-Founder, Half Day CBD.
It was only a year ago, the pair started visiting hemp farms in Kentucky.
“We started working closely with farmers to bring a market for hemp and then we started realizing the power and the effectiveness of this product to treat certain types of illnesses and replace certain types of medications,” DiCosola said.
“Especially with things like the opioid crisis, helping people having alternatives to natural medicine is extremely powerful, that’s why I was excited to jump in,” said Kameron Norwood, Co-Founder, Half Day CBD.
“We really emersed ourselves in the process. It gave us the opportunity to see everything from farm, to how it’s grown to soil composition, to farming equipment and processing, all the way to once we had this oil, what do we do with it and then we created a brand.”
DiCosola said after a ton of research and scientific testing, they are now producing some 2,500 bottles and 10,000 gummies a month.
“We had to learn how to be a food manufacturer, get certified and everything we needed to do to get up and running. Ten-thousand gummies is nothing in the grand scheme of candy making and we ‘re really excited to take the next leap to make 100,000, 200,000 and eventually a million,” he said.
Half Day CBD is literally a family business, with help from their wives and friends, and a constant presence at Chicago festivals, the business has grown tenfold.
“Being in front of the people, being able to talk them through their first experience with CBD, being able to give them the proper dose, answer any questions they may have, potency, things like that. We’re making sure customers have a great first experience with us,” Norwood said.
“We’ve had such great feedback so far. Our products can help people with arthritis to replacing opioids to chronic pain and illness.”
The Half Day name represents two things.
“Half Day came from the many half days we drove down to Kentucky doing our research. The name also encapsulates the feeling of relief. When you’re stressed out and you’ve got a lot going on, you like to take a half day. Everyone needs a half day,” laughed DiCosola.
A warehouse off-site handles the distribution.
The pair admits they took a leap off faith to start the business, but in the end, they say it’s about helping people.
“It’s so cool to be able to make something that can help someone on all levels, anxiety all the way to chronic pain, is really a powerful thing,” Norwood said.
Half Day CBD products are available online, in stores, and in some doctors offices.
“This is a labor of love. Right now it’s a roll up your sleeves and get it done and that’s taking us to the next level,” DiCosola said.
